Salish Health and Painted Moon Studio are happy to announce our flagship class "Introduction to Contemporary Coast Salish Art!" Taught by Master Artist, Speakthunder Barry
In this class, our students will be learning the history of Coast Salish art and its fundamentals. We will take some time to focus on the shapes and their origins as well as where you might find them in nature. Coast Salish art was one of the primary ways of communicating as Native people, the paintings told stories, taught lessons, kept a record of history, and helped keep the young on the right path.

Students will receive all of the necessary teachings, paperwork, examples and guidance to complete one painting.

A word from our instructor, Master Painter: Speakthunder Berry
"Coastal Salish Tribes consist of related tribes, (the relationship being based on language type/dialect and artistic expression), out of the Pacific Northwest. Primarily speaking, the tribes along the coast from southern Alaska and south all the way down to northern California. There are two types of “coastal Salish art”. There is “Form line” and “Coastal Salish Art”. The “Form line” type represents the older form and style of art that sticks to a strict set of rules and limits on the functionality of shapes and formation of standard shapes. The “Coastal Salish art” style is generally a term used to describe a style that incorporates all of the traditional shapes but instead of sticking to the standard rules of Form line there is a more modern take of movement and freedom to produce shapes freely. The class we are doing today is going to focus on the Coastal Salish Style so we're calling it an introduction Contemporary Coastal Salish art. Here we will go over the Traditional shapes, familiarize ourselves with them by drafting and painting a predetermined design, and learning the painting techniques said design to the best of your ability."
